Many People Die Like You gathers strange, sharp, often darkly funny stories about desire, loneliness, work, sex, power, shame, and the social arrangements people use to make themselves feel less doomed.

It has that excellent European short-story mode where everyone seems composed until one sentence later, when you realise the floor has become a mouth. The stories move between offices, relationships, beaches, families, erotic bargains, private humiliations, and moments of surreal moral slippage. Wolff is very good at discomfort without melodrama: her characters often say the wrong thing, want the wrong thing, notice the wrong thing, and then keep walking as though nothing has happened. Translated by Saskia Vogel, this is a neat one for readers of unsettling literary fiction, translated fiction, Ottessa Moshfegh-adjacent grotesquerie, Fleur Jaeggy-ish coolness, and short stories with bite marks rather than tidy morals.
