Discipline was a Melbourne-based contemporary art journal devoted to critique by way of history, politics, institutions, technologies and other artworks.

Issue No. 4, published in 2015 after eighteen months in development, is especially substantial. It is a 192-page collection of essays, artist projects and conversations moving between Australian contemporary art and a wider international field.

The issue includes writing on and by Gordon Bennett, Juan Davila, Helen Johnson, Richard Tuohy, Wendy Paramor, Hito Steyerl, Amelia Barikin, Nikos Papastergiadis and others, alongside a guest-edited section by Ferdiansyah Thajib of Yogyakarta’s KUNCI Cultural Studies Center. Its subjects move through abstraction, experimental cinema, colonialism and Indigenous Australian art, artistic labour, collaboration, forming the kind of journal that doubles as a minor archive.
