Description of ‘Fluid Prejudice: Australian History Comic Anthology’ edited by Sam Wallman

Published in 2014, Fluid Prejudice brings together around fifty cartoonists, illustrators and writers to redraw Australian history. The title comes from the line attributed to Mark Twain that the ink of history is itself “fluid prejudice.”

Across 175 pages of black-and-white comics and drawings, the anthology moves through colonisation, Aboriginal history, protest movements, racism, migration, environmental politics, labour, queer lives, personal memory and national mythology. Contributors approach these subjects through reportage, autobiography, satire, documentary comics and deliberately subjective reconstruction. The different drawing styles and political positions keep interrupting any possibility of a single authoritative Australian story; it's fantastic. Contemporary reviews singled it out precisely for its attention to underrepresented and marginalised histories.

Edited and published by Melbourne cartoonist and comics journalist Sam Wallman, whose later work has continued to move between labour history, politics and graphic journalism.

Edition/Condition: Glass Flag, Melbourne, 2014. First edition. Large-format paperback, 175 pp., black-and-white illustrated throughout; cover by Tom O’Hern. Light handling and shelf wear, with some marking and faint staining to the pink covers as pictured. Internally clean and sound. Very good condition.
