'The Age of Sinatra' by David Ohle

Thirty-two years after Motorman, David Ohle returned to its ruined, bureaucratic world with this seriously weird sequel.
Moldenke wakes after another collective “Forgetting” with little more than his name and fragments of his previous life, moving through a society of neutrodynes, reanimated corpses, absurd laws, improvised religions and political factions obsessed with maintaining “balance.”
Smoking hair produces “cricket consciousness”; government ideology insists there must be as much sorrow as joy, crime as punishment, pain as pleasure; history survives as mangled cultural debris. Beneath the grotesquerie, though, Ohle is interested in memory, bodily autonomy, political myth, and contemporary reviews positioned it somewhere between Beckett, Burroughs and speculative satire, without it behaving quite like any of them.
