The title is beautifully exact. The eye is both aperture and obstruction — something that lets the world in while inevitably altering what arrives.

The collection moves through ekphrastic poems, encounters with place and more intimate meditations on time, grief and embodiment, repeatedly asking what remains outside the frame and what our ways of seeing quietly manufacture. Lucas herself describes the book as concerned with the external world as mediated through individual perspective. 

The opening section, “The Long Gallery,” works closely with visual art, where paintings become devices for thinking about absence, layering and the instability of the visible; later sections widen that attention toward habitation, landscape and lived experience. Critics have particularly noted the collection’s movement between obstruction and revelation, and the way Lucas treats seeing as an active, provisional process rather than neutral observation. 

A quietly intelligent collection for readers interested in ekphrasis, perception, landscape and the strange transaction between an object and the person looking at it.
