Set partly in seventeenth-century London and partly in a world where time, gender and geography refuse obedience, Sexing the Cherry follows the enormous Dog-Woman and Jordan, the abandoned child she raises.

Their stories move through plague, civil war, voyages, fairy tales and impossible cities, while a second narrative brings their forms into the present. Winterson uses history as raw material rather than scenery. The novel asks how identity survives the stories imposed upon it, and whether desire can create routes beyond the body, the family and linear time. Strange, comic and intellectually unruly.
