This novel follows Brooklyn family across three separate years—2019, 2020, and 2021—returning each time to the same day in April.

Through shifting perspectives, Cunningham traces how marriages strain and settle, how children grow into new selves, and how the quiet routines of a household change under the pressures of time and circumstance.

Set partly against the disorienting backdrop of the pandemic years, the novel examines how ordinary lives absorb historical events almost sideways—through disrupted routines, altered relationships, and private reckonings. As in Cunningham’s earlier work, the focus is less on plot than on the emotional weather that shapes family life.
