'Smiling in Slow Motion' by Derek Jarman

An intimate record of a life lived in the shadow of mortality, Smiling in Slow Motion collects Derek Jarman's journals from 1991 to 1994, the final years of the filmmaker, artist and writer's life.
Moving between his garden at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, London's queer artistic circles, filmmaking, illness, friendship and political outrage, Jarman records the everyday with an extraordinary mixture of tenderness, mischief and fury. His entries move freely between the domestic and the historical: planting flowers, remembering lovers, navigating hospital visits, arguing with the British establishment and confronting the devastation of the AIDS crisis.
Despite his health, he remains attentive to beauty, gossip, art, sex and memory, keeping his writing fragmentary, funny, occasionally vicious and frequently moving. It's accompanied by photographs that document the people, places and creative communities surrounding him, lending to this gorgeous way about him.
