'Flight' by Nadia Wheatley & Amin Greder

A children’s book that refuses to stay safely in the children’s section.
First published at the height of global debates around refugees and borders, it tells a simple story — a family forced to flee — using spare language and Greder’s stark, charcoal-heavy illustrations. Figures are small, landscapes loom, colours are mesmerising and monotone.
The text is reserved and meaningful, a lot of the emotional work to the images. There’s no lesson spelled out, no soft landing. Instead, the book asks the reader — child, adult, both — to sit with displacement, power, and vulnerability.
It’s often used in classrooms, but it works just as strongly as a political artefact, as a title that tends to age upwards. Many people come back to it years later and realise it was doing far more than they noticed at the time.
