Four works of contemporary European fiction from Fitzcarraldo Editions, collected here as a set. Moving between Denmark, Germany and Italy, these books approach family, sexuality, memory and alienation, all in distinctive ways.

The Companions | Christina Hesselholdt
Translated from the Danish by Paul Russell Garrett. A polyphonic novel following a group of friends whose conversations, private obsessions and contradictory recollections gradually reveal the absurdities of intimacy. Comic, fragmented and psychologically acute.

The Appointment | Katharina Volckmer
An outrageous, darkly funny monologue delivered during a medical appointment. Volckmer moves through sex, shame, German history, bodily identity and fantasies of transformation, dismantling the boundaries of respectable confession.

While We Were Dreaming | Clemens Meyer
Translated from the German by Katy Derbyshire. A raw, episodic account of young men coming of age in Leipzig around the collapse of East Germany. Friendship, violence, drinking, petty crime and the disorientation of a world whose rules have abruptly disappeared.

Strangers I Know | Claudia Durastanti
Translated from the Italian by Elizabeth Harris. An autobiographical novel tracing a childhood between Italy and America, shaped by Deaf parents, migration, family mythology and the instability of memory. Durastanti examines how the stories we inherit become entangled with those we invent about ourselves.

Together, these four books offer sharply different approaches to contemporary fiction, from experimental dialogue and confessional monologue to collective memory and fragmented autobiography.
