'Normal People' by Sally Rooney

Two people, circling each other over years.
Rooney writes intimacy and the terms of connection in ways the characters can feel but rarely articulate cleanly. Connell and Marianne aren’t “types” so much as conditions. The book tracks how they change depending on where they are, who’s watching, what’s expected of them.
School, university, relationships...each context rewrites them slightly, and the tragedy (if there is one) is how much of that rewriting gets internalised as truth. What Rooney does well—and why the book stuck the way it did—is strip away the narrative scaffolding most novels rely on. A fast, good read.
2018 Faber & Faber paperback edition. Very good condition; light creasing to spine and minor shelf wear, otherwise clean and tightly bound.
