'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' by T.S. Eliot

Written for his family.
A sequence of light-footed poems cataloguing the secret lives, habits, and moral quirks of cats, it reads like nonsense verse with a scalpel hidden inside. Famously the poems inspired the musical Cats, forever immortalising them. Excpet that one time where Taylor Swift as Bombalurina tried to kill them. Didn't work though.
Beneath the charm is Eliot’s exacting ear for rhythm, character, and social observation. It's a reminder that seriousness and play are not opposites and that poetry can stalk, purr, and bite in the same breath.
