Set in the townships of apartheid-era South Africa, Athol Fugard's Tsotsi follows a young gang leader whose life has been shaped by violence, deprivation and the deliberate suppression of his own past.
Known only as Tsotsi, a township slang term for gangster, he moves through Johannesburg's streets with a small group of criminals, committing acts of brutality without hesitation. When an encounter with a woman leaves him unexpectedly responsible for a baby, the fragile structure of his existence begins to unravel.
Fugard's novel is as much an examination of consciousness as it is a portrait of social violence. Through Tsotsi's gradual confrontation with memory, language and responsibility, the narrative explores how a person might recover a sense of humanity within conditions designed to systematically deny it. Written in spare, psychologically attentive prose, the novel refuses easy redemption, locating its moral questions within the material realities of poverty and apartheid rather than treating violence as an individual failing alone.
Edition/Condition: Penguin Books, 1983. Paperback edition. Originally published in South Africa in 1980. Good vintage condition, with moderate rubbing, creasing and edge wear to the covers, some age-toning to the pages, and a sound binding.
