The Time Before This is an early novel by Nicholas Monsarrat, published in 1962, written before he became permanently associated with naval war fiction.

This is a quieter, more inward book. A sequence of loosely linked pieces that move through memory, belief, boredom, faith, and ordinary moral navigation.

It’s restrained, dry, and very much of its moment, but in a way that’s aged well: mid-century uncertainty without theatrics.
