'Soviet Education' by Nigel Grant

A strange Pelican paperback from the mid-century period where mass-market publishing didn't think twice about printing 250 pages for readers to get neck-deep in comparative educational systems, ideological formation, rural inequality, youth movements, and state infrastructure.
Published during the Cold War but written with a surprisingly measured tone, the book examines the Soviet education system as a total social project: schooling as nation-building, labour management, moral formation, scientific acceleration and class restructuring all at once. Grant moves through curriculum design, the Pioneer movement, technical training, rural disparities, arts education and centralised planning with a kind of cautious empirical curiosity that feels very different from the flattened “evil empire” shorthand that would later dominate Anglo accounts of the USSR.
The sections on uneven educational access between urban and rural populations, central directives failing in practice, ideological participation blending with extracurricular life, and the state attempting to engineer both technical competence and moral coherence, all look like an early map of platform governance and institutional scale problems. The book unintentionally becomes a study in what happens when a system tries to produce citizens architecturally.
The Pelican edition itself is gorgeous in that utilitarian way Penguin used to do so well: clean typography, severe colour blocking, institutional optimism embedded directly into the cover design. The kind of paperback that feels designed for train rides, trade union halls, teacher desks and second-hand shop bins full of collapsed futures.
1970 Pelican reprint of the revised 1968 edition. Good second-hand condition with light age toning and minor shelf wear to wraps. Interior remains clean with a little marginalia, tightly bound throughout.
