Written during the final years of the Second World War and published in 1945, Wars I Have Seen is Gertrude Stein’s inside-out of domestic life: food shortages, waiting, memory, boredom, repetition. War appears obliquely as atmosphere, filtered through her unmistakable syntax and refusal of conventional drama. 

This first UK edition is a worn but intact reading copy: a materially honest object from the period it describes. Not pristine, not precious — but historically situated, and very much alive on the page.
