The Buried Harbour gathers selected poems by Giuseppe Ungaretti, one of the central figures of European modernism, whose work stripped poetry down to its barest, most resonant elements.

Ungaretti’s poems emerge from war, exile, and spiritual crisis, often no more than a handful of lines, yet charged with silence, grief, and sudden clarity. His language is condensed to the point where each word feels excavated rather than written — an aesthetic that reshaped twentieth-century poetry.

This English translation by Australian poet Kevin Hart is unusually sensitive to Ungaretti’s austerity. Hart preserves the poems’ restraint and precision without smoothing away their strangeness, allowing the work’s pauses, fractures, and reverberations to remain intact.
