Description of 'Granta 86: Film' edited by Ian Jack

This film-centred issue of Granta treats cinema as an unruly meeting place for memory, biography, criticism and fiction.

John Fowles revisits the making of The French Lieutenant’s Woman; Jonathan Lethem writes perceptively and irreverently on John Cassavetes; Maarten ’t Hart recalls Werner Herzog and an apparently inexhaustible supply of rats; while Thomas Keneally, Tessa Hadley, Atom Egoyan and Ian Jack approach film from markedly different angles.

The issue is particularly strong on the imperfect machinery surrounding cinema: adaptations that mutate, unrealised films, strange productions, marginal performers and the private obsessions that survive behind a finished image. Illustrated throughout with drawings, stills and production artwork, including material relating to filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Greenaway and Martin Scorsese.

Granta 86, Summer 2004. Illustrated paperback. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers; internally clean and sound.
