'Emperor of the Air' by Ethan Canin

Canin’s debut collection, very much in the tradition of American literary realism shaped by writers like Raymond Carver and John Cheever: stories where very little appears to happen, yet everything quietly does.
Set largely in American suburbs and university towns, the stories follow doctors, children, aging parents, and drifting sons as they navigate illness, disappointment, loyalty, and love. Canin writes with a patient observational style, attentive to the moments where relationships subtly shift: a conversation at a dinner table, a remembered childhood humiliation, a long friendship beginning to wear thin.
The title story, often singled out as the centrepiece of the collection, traces a boy’s complicated attachment to his aging violin teacher — a portrait of admiration, fragility, and the uneasy passage of time.
