'There Are Doors' by Gene Wolfe

A young man in contemporary Chicago meets a woman who does not belong to his world.
Green is beautiful, self-possessed, and possibly not human. She moves between realities through sacred, literal doors that open onto a parallel society where ritual, hierarchy, and violence operate under unfamiliar rules. When she returns to her own world, he can't help but follow.
Part romance, part metaphysical thriller, part study of obsession; we see a world of office buildings and otherworldly courts written as though one and the same, allowing the uncanny to slip into the ordinary before we ever notice.
Less baroque than The Book of the New Sun, but no less deliberate, this is Wolfe working in a leaner key, it's a standalone work, dense, but totally Wolfe.
