Brandon Hobson’s The Removed follows the Echota family fifteen years after their son Ray-Ray is killed in a police shooting.
Maria moves through grief while caring for her husband Ernest, whose memory is beginning to fail; Sonja drifts into loneliness and unstable romantic fixation; Edgar has fled into drugs and estrangement; and Ray-Ray’s absence remains the organising wound around which everyone keeps moving.
The novel draws on Cherokee history, storytelling, and myth; the living and the dead sit close together here. A foster child arrives who seems uncannily connected to what the family has lost, while another thread moves through the Darkening Land, a space between worlds where personal grief and historical violence begin to speak in the same register.
This is a short, strange and brutal novel about kinship, removal, inheritance, and the limits of survival after state violence. It is not neat realism and it is not trauma-as-plot-content. Hobson lets grief behave like weather: recurring, atmospheric, sometimes absurd, sometimes sacred, often sitting in the room before anyone has named it.
