Description of 'Closely Observed Trains' by Bohumil Hrabal

A slim, razor-sharp novel set in a provincial railway station in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.

Hrabal follows Miloš Hrma, a young apprentice dispatcher more preoccupied with sexual failure than political resistance. Around him: eccentric stationmasters, rubber stamps, flirtations, gossip, and the slow choreography of trains arriving and departing under watchful eyes. The comedy is gentle, almost innocent — until it isn’t.

It is bawdy and tender, ridiculous and devastating. Hrabal writes with a kind of sideways lyricism, where desire sits next to death, farce next to occupation. Throughout it lets awkwardness, shame, and chance carry the weight of history.

Short. Precise. Deeply human.
