The Grass Is Singing is set on a failing farm in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and centres on a marriage hollowed out by isolation, resentment, and unspoken violence.

From its opening pages, the novel makes clear that a crime has occurred; the work lies in understanding the conditions that made it inevitable. Lessing then moves on to dissect the psychology of settler colonialism with brutal clarity: racial hierarchy, economic precarity, gendered power, and moral denial all operate at once.

It shows how ordinary lives are deformed by systems they half-recognise and rarely question.
