When a young Englishman takes a teaching job on a remote Greek island, he becomes entangled in a series of psychological games that dismantle his assumptions about freedom, authorship, and selfhood. 

Part philosophical thriller, part anti-coming-of-age story, The Magus stages manipulation as pedagogy and illusion as control. I loved it as I read it years ago, around the same time as the Secret History, and I think they are kin. If you appreciate narrative, charisma, and authority and how it muddles everything up, you'll potentially enjoy it too.
