The Gunslinger is the opening novel of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, first published in 1982. Part western, part fantasy, part speculative fiction, it introduces Roland Deschain, a gunslinger pursuing a mysterious figure known as the Man in Black across a bleak and shifting landscape.

Unlike King’s horror novels, The Gunslinger is deliberately sparse and episodic, drawing on myth, desert westerns, and philosophical fables. The series is all about obsession, fate, sacrifice, and the cost of single-minded purpose.

This first volume stands on its own as a short, atmospheric novel, while also laying the groundwork for one of the most ambitious long-form projects in modern popular fiction.
