A Mayan Life is one of the earliest novels written by a Maya author and translated into English.

Originally published in Q’eqchi’ under the title La otra cara, the book traces the life of a Maya farmer in Guatemala, moving through childhood, labour, ritual life, and the creeping violence of colonial power.

Rather than adopting the narrative shape of a conventional Western novel, the story unfolds through memory, observation, and everyday experience. Farming, land, family, and spiritual practice form the backbone of the narrative, while the pressures of state violence and cultural erasure sit just beneath the surface.

The book is significant not simply as literature but as testimony. It records a worldview rarely allowed space in print: one where land, history, and identity are inseparable.
