Description of 'Atomised' by Michel Houellebecq

Michel Houellebecq’s Atomised remains one of the defining novels of late-twentieth-century alienation.

The novel is a cold, obscene, strangely tender autopsy of Western individualism at the point where sexual liberation, consumer capitalism, loneliness, and scientific rationalism collapse into each other. Through the lives of two half-brothers — one emotionally paralysed, the other sexually obsessive — Houellebecq maps a society that has mistaken freedom for meaning and desire for intimacy.

It is ugly, funny, philosophical, vulgar, despairing, reactionary, insightful, and emotionally sincere all at once. Houellebecq writes as if social shittiness has collapsed culture entirely, and everyone simply kept going to work afterward.

Vintage paperback edition, 2001, translated by Frank Wynne. Early English-language Vintage printing of Les Particules élémentaires. Light shelf wear and handling marks to wraps, with some edge rubbing; interior clean and binding firm. A solid reading copy.
