'Caracole' by Edmund White
Couldn't load pickup availability
A fevered, baroque, deliberately excessive novel.
Caracole follows Gabriel, a young man drifting through 19th-century Europe, seducing and being seduced, narrating his own mythology as he goes. The setting feels historical but the voice feels modern. The books is fuelled by its own appetite, mostly sexual, aesthetic, emotional. White leans into this to ornament the prose so it becomes an object that's as decadent as well as cruel. A Cruella De Vil of sorts.
For readers interested in queer historical fiction that refuses respectability, that prefers excess to apology. A novel that swirls rather than walks — appropriately titled.
