'In The Green Tree' by Alun Lewis

Published posthumously in 1948, In the Green Tree gathers the work of Alun Lewis, a Welsh poet killed in Burma during the Second World War.
In The Green Tree includes a selection of the letters, mostly from India, written to his family, alongside six uncollected short stories. His poems are marked by a restrained lyricism and a deep unease. Like so much beautiful Welsh poetry, they're attentive to landscape, memory, and the psychological strain of war rather than to martial rhetoric. There is an inwardness here that sets him apart from the more declarative voices of wartime verse.
