'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Honestly if you haven't read it, you should. It's great.
The book that is very much “everyone is rich, sad, drunk, beautifully lit, and spiritually bankrupt,” which is more or less the whole twentieth century in a linen suit. Fitzgerald’s great little novel of glamour, longing, class performance and romantic self-delusion follows Nick Carraway into the orbit of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire whose lavish parties are really just elaborate distress signals thrown across the water toward Daisy Buchanan. It is a book about money pretending to be love, love pretending to be destiny, and destiny turning out to be paperwork, inheritance, timing, and bad driving.
Not a sprawling American epic, but a polished object with a corpse inside it. This edition has extra appeal as a vintage Penguin/movie-cover copy: not rare-rare, but much nicer than a dead modern school-text paperback, and with the specific soft glamour of the 1970s adaptation attached.
Penguin paperback. Australian printing, 1974 reprint. Film tie-in cover featuring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Good vintage used condition. Some age-toning to pages, light cover wear/creasing and general handling, but clean and intact. A lovely 1974 Australian Penguin edition of The Great Gatsby, with the Robert Redford and Mia Farrow film tie-in cover from the Jack Clayton adaptation.
