Description of 'The Heart of the Serpent' edited by the Moscow Foreign Languages Publishing House

The Heart of the Serpent is a Soviet-era science fiction anthology, translated into English and published by the Foreign Languages Publishing House in Moscow—a press designed explicitly to export Soviet literature outward during the Cold War.

The stories, by writers such as Ivan Yefremov and others working within the Soviet speculative tradition, sit in a different imaginative register to Western sci-fi of the same period: less individualist, more collective; less about conquest, more about systems, evolution, and humanity’s place within a broader material universe.

You’re dealing with narratives shaped by ideology but not reducible to it—encounters with alien intelligence, future societies, and scientific possibility that often lean philosophical rather than action-driven. There’s a quiet confidence to them, a sense that the future is something to be understood rather than dominated.

What really lifts this edition, though, is the object itself: stark, modernist design (credited here to N. Grishin), restrained typography, and that unmistakable mid-century Soviet visual language—graphic, abstract, slightly austere. It reads as much like a cultural artefact as it does a book.
