Description of 'The Remains of the Day' by Kazuo Ishiguro

A novel that becomes more devastating the older you get, because what initially reads as restraint slowly reveals itself as a lifetime constructed out of managed avoidance.

Set in post-war England, the novel follows Stevens, a butler travelling through the countryside while reflecting on his decades of service at Darlington Hall. Questions of dignity, loyalty, class performance, fascist appeasement, emotional sacrifice and the violence of professionalism accumulate slowly inside Stevens’ careful narration until the entire structure begins quietly collapsing under its own politeness.

Stevens is not “revealed” in any simplistic sense. Instead, the novel stages selfhood as something sedimentary: years of posture, discipline and institutional obedience gradually hardening into identity itself. Stevens doesn’t merely perform service. He becomes inseparable from the role. The tragedy is not simply that he sacrificed intimacy for duty, but that he can no longer fully distinguish the two.

Stevens’ obsession with composure, timing, anticipatory care, emotional containment, and “dignity” feels less like period fiction and more like the logical endpoint of service culture under aristocratic capitalism. The butler here is essentially an operating system for someone else’s comfort.

1989 Faber first hardback edition, reprinted the same year. Very good second-hand condition with light shelf wear and mild age toning. Clean interior and strong binding throughout.
