Description of 'A Woman Looking At Men Looking At Women' by Siri Husvedt

One of my favourite Husvedt texts, this is a wide-ranging essay collection on art, perception, sex, neuroscience, literature, and the unstable business of being a mind inside a body.

Hustvedt moves between close readings of artists and writers, feminist argument, memoir-inflected reflection, and philosophical inquiry, asking who gets to look, who gets interpreted, and how authority gets smuggled into supposedly neutral acts of seeing. It’s one of those books that sits between criticism and thinking-in-public: rigorous, elegant, and a little restlessly omnivorous.

What keeps it alive is that Hustvedt is not just doing “women in art” as a tidy theme. She is interested in consciousness, embodiment, gendered perception, psychoanalysis, and the cultural staging of intellect itself. The book has real crossover appeal for readers of art writing, feminist thought, literary essays, and mind/body theory. I think about it often, and re-read it often too.
