Wright’s poems hold so much beauty and damage in the same frame. Birds, trees, stone, heat and human bodies remain intensely physical, but the poems keep asking what history has deposited inside those things: dispossession, colonial violence, family memory, grief, love and extinction. Her environmental and Aboriginal-rights activism increasingly entered the work, without turning the poems into slogans. The selection spans work from 1946 through to Phantom Dwelling, making it a strong single-volume route through one of the central Australian poets of the twentieth century.
