Anne S. Walker’s memoir traces a life spent inside the international women’s movement as it expanded from local organising and community education into a dense global network of conferences, development programs, media projects and political advocacy.

Beginning with her Australian childhood and early work with the YWCA in Fiji, Walker follows her path through Iran, Kenya, Mexico, the United States and the United Nations system, recording both the movement’s institutional history and the ordinary labour that sustained it.

Walker later became the founding director of the International Women’s Tribune Centre, established after the landmark 1975 International Women’s Year conference in Mexico City. Her account is especially valuable for showing how feminist politics travelled: through workshops, newsletters, translation, friendships, improvised offices and alliances formed across immense differences of nationality, class and political circumstance. It is less a heroic memoir than a practical history of movement-building—full of the stubborn administrative work by which ideals acquire infrastructure.
