Bruce Cook’s biography concentrates on Bertolt Brecht’s years of displacement after the Nazi seizure of power: first through Europe and Scandinavia, then in the United States, where he collided with Hollywood, émigré politics and the machinery of anti-communist suspicion. 

Cook goes deep into Brecht’s political commitments and his practical opportunism. He follows work with figures including Fritz Lang and Hanns Eisler, the battles over credit and authorship, and the relationships between Brecht’s revolutionary aesthetics and the compromises of exile. Written in 1982, it reflects an older biographical mode and can be overly invested in personality, but it remains a useful account of exile as both historical condition and artistic pressure.
