Martine Hartmann grows up in Sydney with her mother Lotte, a Holocaust survivor whose emotional distance and unspoken history become part of the atmosphere of childhood.

Martine eventually leaves for New York and builds a career as a photographer, but nine years later her young daughter Ruby disappears in Central Park, exploding the life she has made and forcing her back toward the familial history she has spent years trying to translate into images. 

Burning In is about how trauma survives. Juchau moves between motherhood, artistic ambition, memory and loss through photography, as this way of thinking about what can be seen, framed, preserved or still missed. The novel was shortlisted for several major Australian literary awards, including the 2008 Prime Minister’s Literary Award and Commonwealth Writers’ Prize.
