Description of ‘Control: Digitality as Cultural Logic’ by Seb Franklin

In Control, Seb Franklin argues that digitality has become a governing logic of contemporary capitalism, reorganising how labour, identity, social relations and even human experience are understood.

Drawing on Marx, Deleuze, cybernetics, media theory and the history of computing, Franklin traces the emergence of control from nineteenth-century industrial capitalism through wartime information systems and into contemporary consumer culture. His idea is that computation has now the monopolised way of determining how the world is measured, divisible and available for management.

His analysis moves between the abstraction of labour, the quantification of social life, behavioural prediction and the production of consumer identities. I found the section on how representation itself becomes an instrument of control; this way we now describe, classify and model a person, is increasingly to establish the conditions under which they can be acted upon. A rigorous work of critical media theory.
