Description of 'Daylight in Nightclub Inferno: Czech Fiction from the Post-Kundera Generation' edited and introduced by Elena Lappin

A very bower books book.

This is an anthology of Czech fiction written after the Velvet Revolution, deliberately positioned against the internationally dominant image of Czech literature created by Kundera, Hrabal, Škvorecký and the dissident generation before them. Lappin gathers stories and novel excerpts from writers coming into their own after 1989, when the old ideological enemy had disappeared but the world had not exactly produced psychic tranquillity in its place.

There’s surrealism, black comedy, domestic collapse, sex, cultural drift and the strange flatness of living after the supposedly decisive event. Contributors include Jáchym Topol, Michal Ajvaz, Tereza Boučková, Jiří Kratochvil, Alexandra Berková, Michal Viewegh and others, translated by a substantial group of Czech-English translators. It was one of the first English-language anthologies devoted specifically to this younger generation of Czech writers.

Catbird Press, North Haven, Connecticut, 1997. First edition. Paperback. Light shelf wear and rubbing to covers; internally clean and unmarked, binding firm. Very good condition.
