'Dialogue No. 9: Silence' — July 1998

An incredibly beautiful issue of Dialogue, which is saying something because they're all amazing.
Dialogue was an independent Melbourne art publication associated with West Space, and this issue is concerned with silence. It explores the acoustic, social, psychological, spatial and performative sides and shapes of it throughout. The issue glides through sound art, dance, philosophy, perception and the politics of withholding, thinking about the things that make silence feel 'full'.
The pieces shown here in the photos move from Kafka’s The Silence of the Sirens and writing on inner listening, to Junko Wada and Hans Peter Kuhn’s dance-sound work, Neil McLachlan on perceptual reference frames and “existential noise”, and reflections on voice, architecture, death and performance. The design itself is doing part of the argument: broken typography, interruptions, sparse pages and long vertical lines make reading feel almost scored.
This copy is especially amazing because it retains Domenico de Clario’s accompanying 1998 double CD, Love Songs for Lost Sheep, recorded at the University of Western Sydney with de Clario on piano and voice. De Clario’s own archive lists the recording among his published works from that year.
Dialogue, No. 9, July 1998. Melbourne. Illustrated softcover art journal with original accompanying double CD by Domenico de Clario present. Light handling and shelf wear to covers; internally clean and well preserved. CD appears visually clean. Very good condition overall.
