Description of 'Discovering Reality: Feminist Perspectives on Epistemology, Metaphysics, Methodology, and Philosophy of Science' edited by Sandra Harding & Merrill B. Hintikka

One of the foundational collections of feminist philosophy of science.

Across essays on epistemology, metaphysics, scientific method, psychoanalysis, political philosophy and the social sciences, its contributors challenge the idea that reason, objectivity and scientific inquiry have ever developed from nowhere.

The collection includes major early work by Sandra Harding, Evelyn Fox Keller, Nancy Hartsock, Jane Flax, Naomi Scheman and others, moving from critiques of Aristotle and reproductive biology to questions of objectivity, language, social science and the feminist standpoint. Published in 1983, it sits at a crucial moment when feminist scholarship moved beyond asking how women had been excluded from existing knowledge and began asking whether the architecture of knowledge itself required rebuilding. Still a genuinely useful book rather than merely a historical artefact.
