In Dry Milk, Chinese writer Huo Yan explores the lives of Chinese migrants in New Zealand, tracing the tensions of belonging.
At its centre is John Lee, an Auckland antique dealer whose attachment to his business and possessions becomes entangled with anxieties about identity, community and his place in a changing society. Through intimate, often unsettling encounters, Huo examines the contradictions of migrant life. There's this desire to establish roots while remaining attached to another homeland, the relationships between generations, and the ways economic ambition and cultural inheritance shape individual lives.
Originally published in Chinese in 2013, Dry Milk appears here in an English translation by Duncan M. Campbell, published by Australian independent literary press Giramondo.
