'Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance' by Irvine Welsh
Couldn't load pickup availability
The book that supplied My Chemical Romance with their name, a minor but stubborn piece of cultural afterlife.
A paralysed romance novelist discovers what her husband has been doing with her fortune; a woman injured by a thalidomide-like drug recruits a football hooligan to help punish the pharmaceutical executive responsible; and two people stranded in miserable adult lives find one another on the dance floor.
Welsh uses ecstasy as both substance and narrative proposition. He uses chemical intimacy as a way we may briefly dissolve class, inhibition and the deadening routines of British life, but the world waiting after the comedown remains largely intact. The stories move between grotesque revenge comedy and genuine tenderness, while turning hospitals, corporations, suburban marriages and clubs into different systems for managing bodies.
Vintage paperback, first printing of this edition, 1997. Good reading condition with heavy cover creasing and wear.
