Description of 'Eden: Graphics & Poems' by Charles Tomlinson

Poet Charles Tomlinson was also a visual artist, and Eden is built out of how those two interact.

Tomlinson puts graphics, photographs, collage, drawing and verse into conversation, allowing objects and landscapes to recur in altered forms. The book contains twenty-nine reproductions of this visual work, alongside his poetry.

Tomlinson’s longstanding subject is how a thing 'becomes', when looked at in different ways — and Eden makes that process visible. A skull can become landscape; landscape can become a structure of thought; the physical solidity of stone can push a poem towards metaphysics. The visual work has the same sort of quality as the poems, making for a beautifully odd hybrid book about art and practice.

Redcliffe Press / Redcliffe Poetry, Bristol, 1985. First edition. Paperback, 79 pp. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Light shelf wear and rubbing to covers, with minor edge and corner wear. Internally clean; binding firm. Very good condition. Bibliographic records confirm this as the 1985 first edition.
