'Evil' by Rennie Sparks

A scarce collection of stories from American writer and visual artist Rennie Sparks, published by the small independent Black Hole Press in 2000.
Written in a stripped-back, first-person voice, these short pieces inhabit motel rooms, parking lots, broken homes, addiction, domestic violence, teenage desire and emotional neglect with an unsettling matter-of-factness. Rather than building toward revelation, Sparks lets each story accumulate through fragments of memory and observation, producing an atmosphere that feels somewhere between confessional writing, transgressive fiction and contemporary outsider literature.
Although best known today as one half of the cult duo The Handsome Family, Sparks' fiction shares the band's fascination with Americana's darker underside—ordinary lives drifting into absurdity, violence and melancholy without spectacle or sentimentality. The stark black-and-white illustrations throughout reinforce the book's strange, handmade quality, making it an appealing find for readers interested in underground presses, cult fiction, feminist writing and overlooked literary voices from the American independent scene.
2000 Black Hole Press paperback. Very good condition with clean pages, a tight binding and only light shelf wear.
