Josef Koudelka’s Exiles is one of the defining photographic books of displacement: a sequence made largely during the decades after he left Czechoslovakia, following his photographs of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Prague.

It is full of people, animals, roads, funerals, empty landscapes and temporary shelters, all appearing as though everything has been loosened slightly from its proper place. Koudelka’s photographs are severe, yet somehow full of light and warmth. They are full of solitude, accident and black humour, but also shed a physical intimacy with the world. Through bodies half-hidden by architecture, a dog cutting across snow, a ball suspended above a street, figures caught between arrival and disappearance. The cumulative effect becomes an extended study of what it means to live without a fixed centre.

This revised and expanded edition returns to the landmark 1988 book with ten additional photographs, bringing the sequence to 75 duotone images. It also includes Czesław Miłosz’s essay on exile, biographical and bibliographical material by Stuart Alexander, and commentary drawn from conversations between Koudelka and his longtime editor Robert Delpire.
