First published in 1973, Gravity’s Rainbow is Pynchon’s enormous, paranoid, obscene, comic war novel.

He gave us a book in which V-2 rockets, Pavlovian psychology, military bureaucracy, sex, statistics, corporate power, occult systems and cartoon logic all exist in the same zany world. Set largely in Europe during the final months of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, the novel follows Tyrone Slothrop, an American lieutenant whose sexual encounters appear to anticipate future rocket strikes. From there, causality itself starts to rot. Pynchon turns the war into a vast machine of overlapping systems—military, technological, economic, psychological—while constantly asking whether those systems are actually connected, or whether the human brain simply cannot resist manufacturing patterns from noise.

It is dense, filthy, ludicrous, frightening and structurally unhinged in a very deliberate way: one of the major postwar novels about technology, control, paranoia and the machinery hidden underneath modern life.
