Eliza Dune Daiza’s first full-length collection works through the haibun form; prose paired with haiku.

Across its eighty pages, family deaths, diaspora, environmental precarity, memory and metaphysical become transportive, and never a thesis. The movement is often from the intimate to the planetary: a domestic object, a dead spider, a childhood recollection or a shoreline becomes the point from which questions of extinction, inheritance and impermanence begin to widen. 

Daiza’s poems are lush, full of seawalls, islands, glaciers, roots, insects, relics and bodies. Within she keeps finding funny little continuities between states like the living and the dead, the sacred and comic, geological time and private memory. Her skill is deeply apparent; she can move from genuine ecological dread to dry absurdity in a sentence. A lovely work.
