Produced with The Nature Conservancy, Heart of the Land gathers thirty writers answering the question: what does it mean to know a place well enough to recognise what would be lost if it disappeared?
The essays move across protected and threatened landscapes throughout the United States and beyond, with a list of contributors the likes of Terry Tempest Williams, Rick Bass, Thomas McGuane, William Kittredge, Linda Hogan, Louise Erdrich, Peter Matthiessen, Paul Theroux, Carl Hiaasen, William Least Heat-Moon, many more. It doesn't feel like a conventional conservation anthology, it sits closer to literary nature writing: personal history, ecology, travel, grief and attachment accumulating around particular landscapes. The collection was originally commissioned around The Nature Conservancy’s “Last Great Places” programme, with each writer approaching place through their own form and temperament.
