Peter L. Berger’s Invitation to Sociology is one of the great readable entrances into sociological thinking.

Berger presents the sociologist as a kind of professional eavesdropper on social life, someone trained to notice the scripts, roles, institutions, rituals, class signals, moral alibis, and hidden arrangements that make ordinary life feel natural when it is anything but.

The appeal here is that Berger makes sociology feel dangerous in a fairweather cardigan. He writes about society as drama, sociology as consciousness, debunking, biography, ethics, social control, identity, and the way people are shaped by structures they often experience as personal choice. Very good for readers beginning sociology, but also for anyone interested in ideology, everyday life, institutions, performance, class, religion, and the gentle violence of “common sense.” A classic for a reason: lucid, slightly mischievous, and still very useful.
